WHY I AM RUNNING FOR THE IMO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY COME 2015

I have been drafted by my party faithful and other well-meaning sons and daughters of our great community to contest the 2015 Imo State House of Assembly Elections under the auspices of our great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). I am humbled by the earnestness of those who sought to persuade me to represent the Owerri-West State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly.

In their effort to convince me to assume the burden of campaigning for this position, well-meaning members of our community have stressed the need for change. They bemoaned the current state of politics, describing the Imo State House of Assembly as “a cesspool of corruption, an oasis of immorality and an open sewage of political prostitution and banditry.”

Rather than be a fool who rushes where angels fear to tread, I thought more than twice before venturing into a place that has been said to resemble “a political Gomorrah.” I have been asked about the possibility of becoming unduly influenced by a system that has been in place for decades. My response to this is that I am running for this position to serve our people. I have earned enough wealth on my own, through hard work and perseverance, and there is not enough money in the state legislature to unduly influence me. Nothing could possibly change my resolve to improve the lives of my people after seeing firsthand the level of decay resulting from years of neglect in Owerri-West LGA.

Although our State House of Assembly is but a microcosm of the larger society, we can still insist that Owerri-West deserves the very best. Thus, in response to the faith and persistence of my people, I have eventually accepted to seek candidacy for election into the Imo State House of Assembly, seeking to represent Owerri-West LGA at the state house, and under the auspices of our great Party, the PDP

I am eager to hit the campaign trails and discuss the serious issues confronting us and the state and how these issues could be best handled from the chambers of the State House of Assembly. I am very confident that by God's grace, we can begin to create jobs for the people. As Ronald Reagan once said, the best social program for the people is a good job. We can create a manufacturing base in Owerri-West, we can address the problem of emergency healthcare, improve education by bringing our schools up to world standards.

This entails improving teacher education, beginning early childhood education, building libraries, building laboratories, supplying textbooks, and engaging our young people in gainful employment during breaks and holidays. We can begin to slowly resuscitate the state from the depression that has plagued us for more than three years. My confidence is rooted in the belief that most man-made problems can be solved and they are in due course solved by man under the inspiration of God.

The notion of sowing and reaping is more than a casual metaphor. However, the people of Owerri-West are not always able to partake of their harvest. As is the case of those who own cows and allow their herds to destroy crops belonging to Owerri-West farmers. This problem will be addressed to protect our people from such abuses.

A nation sleeps on whatever bed it has laid. It is time for us to lay a new bed; it is time for us to believe. We have traded the dream of a great people for the nightmare of a stagnating infrastructure; we have been paralyzed in economic and human capital development. It is time to force those entrusted with the responsibilities of representing us to live up to the promise of a better future for our people.

It is time for us to change. It is time to think, not just about what you know I can do for Owerri West; it is time to believe in what, together, we can do for Owerri West.

First, we must wake up to the truth that faith without work is a waste. I am embarking on an adventure of faith—the changing of Owerri-West into a place where truth, justice and liberty reign; where fairness and equality shall yield the harvests of the unity and progress that we have needed, but which has eluded us for too long. My goal is to be part of a vanguard that will use the chambers of the State House of Assembly to prepare a new bed for our State - a new bed where Owerri-West will be very well represented. As a legislator, my energy will be focused on instituting certain bedrock principles and insisting that members of the house adhere to them.

Sincerely,

Dr. Emeka J. Amanze: Agbara1
