Mohamed bin Salman, a.k.a. MBS could crash out of his position as crown prince and future successor to King Salman as quickly as he burst onto the scene. Not everyone, least of all Saudi Arabia's staunchest backer, the US, is comfortable with the growing list of disastrous and embarrassing decisions and actions of the 33-year old MBS.
The catalog of debacles includes the kidnapping of Lebanese Presidents, Hariri, forcing him to announce his resignation in a broadcast made from Saudi Arabia, the brutal murder of US-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered inside the Saudi embassy in Istanbul, Turkey, and the ongoing war in Yemen, which has turned into a humanitarian disaster with the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent women and children who perished from so-called Saudi coalition bombings that target and destroy schools, hospitals, apartment buildings, places of worship, and even wedding processions.
It is not clear how long before MBS is shown the door.
It is not clear how long before MBS is shown the door.
However, from Germany to France, and Britain (somewhat), it is clear that the young butcher of Riyadh is not one that the West, especially the Europeans can work with. Not even the policy confusion and dissonance from the Trump administration appears to be working in MBS's favor as key Trump allies in the US Senate have become vocal in their calls for MBS to go.
